Sun Yang of China won gold in the men’s 200m freestyle on Monday night, though South Africa’s Chad le Clos led under world record pace for much of the race.
Sun clocked one minute, 44.65 seconds, while le Clos’ 1:45.20 was good enough for silver.
Team USA’s Conor Dwyer won the bronze with 1:45.23, a personal best. Fellow American Townley Haas finished fifth with a time of 1:45.58.
James Guy of Great Britain, the 2015 World champion, finished fourth.
Paul Biedermann’s world record, set at the height of the rubberized supersuit era at the 2009 World Championships, was again untouchable at 1:42.00. Beidermann finished sixth with 1:45.84.
Neither 2012 Olympic champion Yannick Agnel of France nor co-silver medalist Park Tae Hwan of South Korea advanced out of the preliminary heats.
