Coroner identifies man killed in deadly DUI crash, says he wasn’t wearing a seat belt

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — The Berkeley County Chief Deputy Coroner has identified the victim of a deadly DUI crash on Sunday night.

One person has been charged with felony DUI, following a crash that killed a person on I-26 in Ridgeville Sunday night, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol officials (SCHP). Officials say the driver was changing lanes westbound on I-26 near mile marker 190 when he hit another vehicle around 11:30 p.m. That vehicle ran off the road and overturned, according to SCHP, and the driver 46-year-old Walter McDowell was pronounced dead on scene. Officials say McDowell was not wearing a seat belt.

We’re told the car that caused the crash overturned and hit a tree. Three people in the car were taken to Trident Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
