Judge commits Ebony Wilkerson to psychiatric hospital

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla (WCBD) — A judge in Florida has ruled the Lowcountry mother who drove her kids into the ocean will be involuntarily committed to a state hospital.

Ebony Wilkerson faced Judge Leah Case on Friday, July 22.

Wilkerson was found not guilty by reason of insanity of three counts of child abuse after authorities say she drove into the Atlantic Ocean just off of Daytona Beach in 2014. Attempted murder charges were changed to child abuse before entering a plea.

Wilkerson could have had her conditional release revoked after she stopped taking her medication while staying at Lake Wales Care Center. In court, Wilkerson said she stopped taking her meds a few months ago because she didn’t understand the importance of them.

She suffered a psychiatric episode in May as a result of being off of her medication.

Her husband also took the stand in her defense saying that she is in fact a good mom.

Prosecutors filed a motion to have Wilkerson sent back to a psychiatric hospital.
