SUMTER, S.C. (WCBD) — A Sumter man wanted in connection to a deadly shooting is now in police custody.
Authorities say Bernie Peoples III, 28, of Sumter, was wanted for the shooting death of Ante Lavern Witherspoon. He turned himself in to law enforcement Saturday afternoon.
Sumter Police spokeswoman Officer Tonyia M. McGirt says officers were called after 4 p.m. on Friday, July 15 to Dibert Street where they found Witherspoon shot to death outside of a home. An autopsy revealed he was shot multiple times.
Through information gathered in the case, detectives were able to identify Peoples as the trigger man, McGirt adds.
We’ve learned both men were acquaintances but investigators are still trying to find out what led to the shooting.
Peoples turned himself in at the Sumter Police Department without incident.
