One person fatally shot by Asheville police officer

ASHEVILLE, NC (WSPA) – One person was shot and killed by Asheville Police officers, Saturday evening.

According to Asheville Police, officers were originally responding to a call for shots fired at the Pisgah View Apartments around 7:00 p.m.

The suspect vehicle was located and officers chased that vehicle to the Deaverview Apartments. Officers say they noticed a female inside the car struggling with the driver.

When officers stopped the vehicle, they began giving the driver commands. The officers say a suspect displayed a weapon and was fatally shot. No officers nor anyone else in the car was injured.

Asheville Police have identified the driver killed as 35-year-old Jai Lateef Solveig Williams of Asheville.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will be investigating the shooting. The officer involved, Sergeant Tyler Radford, has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Radford is a Patrol Supervisor and has been with the Asheville Police since 2008.
