Bond denied for hit and run driver police say killed two teens

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — The man accused of running over two teenagers and lying about his car being stolen during the incident will remain in jail.

Bernis Webb Jr. was denied bond at hearing Friday afternoon. According to an affidavit, the 48-year-old is charged with fleeing the scene of an accident causing death and filing a false report.

Family members of both victims, 16-year-old Deandre Richardson and 15-year-old Leonardo Suarez Perez, crowded into court Friday. Richardson’s mother requested the judge for no bond and said nothing could prepare her for the day.

Family of the accused say Webb was an Army veteran and they were troubled by the accusation of Webb initially lying to investigators. “I don’t believe that’s in his character,” said JD Wilkerson, Webb’s brother, “I’ve never known him to behave in such a manner.”

Court documents reveal a motorist stopped to talk to the suspect when his car broke down and asked him if he hit something because of the damage on his car.

Detectives say Webb replied he didn’t know what he hit and that he just needed to go home.
