Suspect arrested after attempted robbery on Church Street

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) -Police arrested a man Tuesday afternoon after he attempted to rob the House of Jerky located at 168A Church Street in Charleston.

Police reports state that 36 year old Jonathan Calo of Church Street attempted to rob the business approximately 1:00 p.m. The suspect was taken into custody at about 4:00 p.m. near State Street and Cumberland Street.

According to authorities Calo has been charged with attempted armed robbery and possession of a knife during the commission of a violent crime. The suspect was being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center.

Calo entered the business armed with a knife and demanded money from the clerk. The clerk then told Calo there were cameras monitoring activity inside of the business, this lead the suspect to flee the without money.

Dispatch provided responding officers with a description of the suspect.

An officer saw a man matching the suspect’s description near State Street and Cumberland Street. The man was detained and identified as the suspect through the investigation and surveillance video from the business.

Police report the investigation into this incident is ongoing.
