Speakers talk about faith, forgiveness and gun control at Emanuel AME memorial service

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — The Ecumenical Worship Service to honor the victims and survivors of last year’s Emanuel AME church shooting began at 10 a.m. at the TD Arena in downtown Charleston.

Gov. Nikki Haley describes the phone calls she received moments after the shooting, then honors each victim and survivor individually.

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg was among the event’s many speakers.

“Can’t we at least remove the availability of these assault rifles to those with criminal backgrounds?” -Mayor John Tecklenburg:

South Carolina State Senator Marolon E. Kimpson drew a standing ovation after his plea for gun control reform.

The service continued with singing a joyful hymn.
