SUMMERVILLE, S.C (WCBD) – A Summerville woman suffers possible permanent sight loss after being assaulted with tar by her live-in boyfriend.
Allen Owens, 52, of Summerville is charged with domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.
On May 31, police responded to a domestic disturbance call at 235 Forest Circle, South Main Mobile Home Park, in Summerville.
We’re told when officers arrived, Owens’ girlfriend, Rochelle Mims, was covered in an unknown black liquid. She was crying and repeatedly stated “it burns”, according to an incident report. Mims claimed that she was assaulted by her live-in boyfriend, Allen Owens.
She stated Owens threw “cold seal” in her face, hit her with a bucket in the face, and punched her in the face with his fist.
An incident report states Mims said she began to lose vision and could no longer see after the substance was thrown on her. She said Owens also threw her into the wall and television during the altercation.
During their investigation, police uncovered an overturned bucket, later identified as Roofers Choice 67 Kool Top roofing tar. The tar was the black substance Mims was covered in. Authorities say the tar covered most of Mims face and body.
Mims was transported to the Summerville Medical Center where medical staff stated she suffered from possible chemical burns and sight loss from the tar.
Several Summerville officers tried to locate Owens, searching the entire mobile home park and surrounding area, but were unable to locate him. He was later found and arrested.
