SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – Spartanburg Police say two pickup trucks were trying to get into the same lane before one of the drivers was shot on East Main Street at Oakwood Ave.
48-year-old Willie Leon Walker was arrested and charged with one count of attempted murder. He faces a judge Friday morning.
The shooting happened around Noon Wednesday.
“It was just one shot like a pop,” said Kelli Wills, who worked nearby. “I could’ve just been in there doing my work and a bullet came through and I have a small child at home.”
Police say when the drivers passed the intersection of Drayton Road and Heywood Avenue, one driver signaled to merge but the other driver did not allow the merge causing that truck to run onto the shoulder of the road, police say.
When they were stopped at a traffic light on E. Main Street, police say the victim left his truck and approached the other truck when he was shot.
The victim was shot in the stomach.
“You have to be in control of your emotions,” said Spartanburg Police Department Major Art Littlejohn. “What happens is one person is not humble, one person is going to get the lane, one person’s not.”
The victim was conscious and was taken to the hospital by EMS, police say. His condition has not been released.
