ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The video has Albuquerque parents asking “What was she thinking?” after seeing a baby sitting behind the wheel of a moving vehicle on mom’s lap.
Police were just as angry when they saw the video. The Albuquerque Police Department said it received calls from family members who were concerned about the baby’s well-being after they told police the video was posted to Facebook over the weekend. But according to APD all this mom could face is a traffic violation.
“It’s stupid. Why anyone would do that is beyond comprehension,” APD spokesperson Tanner Tixier said.
KRQE News 13 showed the video to other parents in Albuquerque. They couldn’t believe what they were seeing.
“It’s despicable if you ask me,” Michael Perea said. “I’m instantly outraged. I mean t’s painful to watch, poor little baby.”
“I’m angry at her because I know she knows better,” Rhoni Coleman said. “That mom was probably a car seat baby; there needs to be some kind of penalty for that.”
But police said the only penalty this woman could face is a citation for not properly restraining the baby in a car seat.
“Trying to push that to be a child abuse charge would be very, very difficult,” Tixier said. “Especially because you can’t see the offenders face in the video.”
APD said officers made a trip to the woman’s home to check on the baby; but no one answered the door.
CYFD also received a tip and launched an investigation.
KRQE News 13 spoke to the mom of the baby. She confirmed it’s her baby in the video, but claims it’s not her driving. She also said someone, over the weekend, posted the video on her Facebook page and tagged her in it. The video has since been taken down.
