Two high-profile Charleston cases scheduled to begin trial simultaneously

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Two high-profile Charleston trials are set to take place simultaneously later this year.

Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof’s death penalty trial is set to begin November 7, 2016.

Michael Slager, the former North Charleston Police officer charged with the murder of Walter Scott in April 2015, is scheduled to begin trial at the same time.

Roof appeared in court on Tuesday, June 7, when the trial date was set.

Prosecutors believe his trial will take somewhere between 2-3 weeks.

It was back in May that U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced prosecutors will seek the death penalty. Roof also faces nine murder counts in state court, where prosecutors are also seeking the death penalty in a trial set to begin in January.

The anniversary of the shooting at the church often called Mother Emanuel is next week.
