MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) — Two children are injured in a house fire on Waterloo Drive in Berkeley County.
Director of Berkeley County Emergency Services Dan Barb says two children, ages six and an infant, were inside when the fire broke out. The six-year-old child got out of the home and has been transported to the hospital.
The children’s father, who was outside at the time, rushed in to burning home to try and get the baby. Officials say the owner of the house also went in and helped rescue the baby. The infant was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina in critical condition, according to Barb.
“He was just like a limp dishrag when the daddy brought him out,” said neighbor Donna Kerns. She said another neighbor, who is also a nurse, performed CPR on the baby before rescue crews arrived.
“[She’s] the real hero,” said Kerns.
Firefighters from multiple departments responded. The home appears to be destroyed and the fire has since been extinguished.
The Berkeley Sheriff’s Office arrested Roderick Dont’e Nunley, the adult who lives at the home, on a probation violation, an outstanding warrant and for providing false information to a deputy.
The fire is being investigated by SLED for origin and cause.
