MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Bailey Ober pitched into the ninth leading the sixth-seeded College of Charleston baseball team to a 7-2 win over No. 2 William & Mary on Thursday at Patriots Point in the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Championships.
Ober (7-4) fell two outs shy of registering his third consecutive complete game when he walked back-to-back hitters in the ninth. The sophomore right-hander struck out six batters and walked three allowing two runs – one earned. In four career starts against William & Mary, Ober is 4-0 and has allowed five earned runs in 32.1 innings (1.39 ERA) against the Tribe.
Dupree Hart was 3-for-4 in the game and scored twice. Eight-of-nine CofC starters recorded a hit, while Bradley Dixon, Tommy Richter, Alex Pastorius and Luke Manzo all turned in multi-hit performances. After going 3-for-3 with a pair of walks against Elon on Wednesday, Manzo started Thursday’s game 2-for-2 with a walk extending his reached base streak in consecutive at-bats to eight. The run ended with a ground out in the eighth inning.
Erven Roper singled home Hart and Manzo in the fifth to open the scoring, while Manzo stretched the lead to 3-0 with an RBI base hit in the sixth. The Cougars put the game out of reach with three runs in the seventh highlighted by a Dixon RBI single.
In the tournament, College of Charleston (31-24-1) has scored 13 of its 16 runs with two outs and was 5-for-9 leading off innings on Thursday.
The Cougars take on top-seeded UNCW on Friday at noon.
