CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – The new season of the Spoleto Festival USA resonates with the spirit of Charleston, which the festival has called home for four decades. The festival includes Spoleto’s first production of the iconic opera “Porgy and Bess” set in Charleston as well as tributes to the victims of last year’s shootings at Mother Emanuel AME Church.
The internationally known performing arts festival, which runs through June 12, has already set box office records.
General Manager Nigel Redden says he expects the festival ticket sales goal of about $3.7 million will be reached by the time Spoleto opens Friday at Charleston City Hall.
“Porgy and Bess” sold out in just two weeks – another festival record – and is the festival’s first production in Charleston’s new $142 million performing arts center.
