Coroner releases identity of woman found along I-26 in Orangeburg County

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has released the identity of the woman found death along Interstate 26 on Saturday, April 9.

Authorities say Cassandra Denise Pompey, 34, of Orangeburg, was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by a motor vehicle. Circumstances surrounding the collision and her death continues to be investigated.

The Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office was called to the location near the Four Holes Road interchange over the interstate early on April 9. A motorist reporting seeing a suspicious object off the side of the roadway that turned out to be a deceased female.

Through a joint investigation with the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, OCSO investigators believe the woman to be a female reported missing from within Orangeburg’s city limits.

Acquaintances told investigators the victim may have suffered from undisclosed medical conditions at the time she was reported missing.
