State House Rep. Wendell Gilliard passes water safety bill

(PRESS RELEASE) — Representative Wendell Gilliard has been successful in his efforts to propel H. 5218 through the House.

The bill will now have a chance to be discussed and, ideally, voted on, in the Senate, where it should face limited opposition.

If passed, the month of May would be declared as “Water Safety Awareness Month”, with the intended purpose of promoting safe water practices in order to reduce drowning deaths in the state.

Representative Gilliard has stated that his rationale for choosing May was that it would allow these discussions to occur just as students across South Carolina begin their summer vacations, a time in which water safety becomes most critical.
