Man accused in I-95 chase and shootout to remain in jail

The Moncks Corner man accused kidnapping his wife then taking law enforcement on wild chase before shooting at them will remain in jail.

Daniel Ward appeared Wednesday at a bond hearing where a judge did not set bail against the 34-year-old because of the severity of the charges.

Ward’s lawyer, James Smiley, did not ask for bail and told a judge his client needs to address mental health concerns.

“It seems convenient for him to say now he was seeking mental health but unfortunately he didn’t go to mental health,” said Chasity Avinger who represents Ward’s estranged wife, “What he did do was climb into his wife’s car and kidnap her at gunpoint.”

Avinger says Ward and his estranged wife have two kids and that she is focusing on protecting her children and Wednesday’s hearing makes things easier for the family. “A denial of bond will hopefully give her some piece of mind so she can sleep at night,” said Avinger.
