Cool School: Allegro Charter School of Music

The mission of Allegro Charter School of Music is to produce inspired and creative students through the infusion of music into an academically challenging environment.   We’re in Downtown Charleston for our Cool School of the week.

Located in Downtown Charleston off of Broad Street, Allegro School of Music has nearly 100 students in 6 through 9th grades.  The school opened this school year, and plans to add a grade level each year up to 12th grade.  Students spend two-and-a-half hours every school day immersed in the study of music.

Technology and music are integrated in all classes.  Interim school leader Laura Blackmore says, “Allegro is special because of the concept of music which is being infused into all areas of the academic day, their classes, we have folks coming in from the Charleston symphony teaching classes and partnering with us, just offering and exposing kids to music and helping them to learn how to solve problems through the concept of music.” Sixth-grade student Jack McKenzie says, “We infuse music to academic classes, and we also have music in the afternoon.” Rebecca Darling is the music theory teacher at Allegro.  She says, “We have cool kids . We’re only cool as long as we have cool kids, and we’ve got a lot of those.  We also don’t assign an instrument to students. They get to pick whatever they want to play, whether it be the guitar, the base clarinet, French horn. The kids will get free private lessons during the week.  We also teach all genres of music.”   ‘It’s a great school.  Even if you’re a beginner, you can work your way up to the top no matter what.  Everybody here will help you.  You have great support here and learn everything you need to know, music, core classes,  everything,” says ninth-grade student Makayla Walker.

Music classes are based upon ability level instead of grade level.   All students are learning at least three  instruments.

Coming up tonight on News 2 at 5,  we’ll take a closer look at the special program offered at Allegro.
