SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (News Release) – On Friday, April 22, 2016 the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) issued a 401 Water Quality Certification permit to the Town of Summerville for the Bear Island Road project.
The public notice issued by Chuck Hightower, Manager of the Water Quality Certification, and Wetlands Section of SCDHEC states “After reviewing the project plans, staff of the Division of Water Quality determined that there is a reasonable assurance that the proposed project will be conducted in a manner consistent with the certification requirements of Section 401 of the Federal Clean Water Act. Additionally, staff of the Ocean and Coastal Zone Management determined that the proposed work is consistent with the Coastal Zone Management Program.”
The Town is currently awaiting approval of the 404 Wetland Permit from the Army Corp of Engineers as well as the Encroachment Permit from the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
“Acquiring the 401 Water Quality permit from SCDHEC is a significant milestone on the path to completing Bear Island Road, a very important transportation project for Summerville” said Russ Cornette, Town Engineer.
“We anticipate having all required permits in place and the project out for bid this Fall with construction beginning in early 2017” Cornette added.
