CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — The Charleston Police Department has asked the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate an incident that occurred about 12:30 p.m. April 18, 2016 between an off-duty Charleston Police officer and a male civilian at St. Philip Street and George Street.

The department’s Professional Standards Office is conducting a parallel investigation into the incident.

The request for SLED to investigate the incident resulted from an internal review by the department.

The incident began as a verbal encounter and then escalated into a physical encounter between the off-duty officer and the civilian after a collision between the off-duty officer’s personal vehicle and the civilian’s bicycle. The off-duty officer was not in uniform.

Officer Kevin Medert, 30, has been placed on administrative leave without pay. He has been with the department since April 1, 2013.
