WALHALLA, S.C. (WSPA) – Two correctional officers and two inmates are in the hospital after a fight in the Oconee County Detention Center.
Walhalla Police and Oconee County Deputies responded to reports that correctional officers were assaulted by inmates just before 4:30pm, Sunday.
The detention center was placed on lockdown after the incident. The severity of the injuries is not known at this time.
All inmates were back in their cells by 5pm. There were 16 inmates in the unit where the fight occurred.
Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw says, “Our detention officers and law enforcement personnel train for situations such as this and within about 30 minutes, the staff was able to de-escalate the situation and take back control of the unit.”
The Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.
