SUMTER, S.C. (AP) – A judge has sentenced a man to 40-years in prison after he pleaded guilty in Sumter to murder, attempted murder and assault.

The Sumter Item reports that 20-year-old Charles G. Singletary III pleaded guilty Tuesday as part of an agreement with prosecutors.

Singletary was charged in the June 2014 killing of Joshua Brown and the attempted killing of Timothy Hodge – both his childhood friends – as well as assaulting Hodge’s mother Margaret Charles.

A prosecutor said the incident occurred after Singletary was accused of stealing headphones and some clothes

After Brown was shot at Hodge’s residence there was a scuffle between Hodge and Singletary in which Hodge’s mother was struck with a handgun.

Singletary escaped through a window and was later arrested after a four-hour manhunt.
