Cool School: Christ Our King-Stella Maris

Christ Our King-Stella Maris strives to inspire the whole child by promoting an educational philosophy of charity, respect, and outreach.  We’re in Mount Pleasant for our Cool School of the week.

Christ Our King-Stella Maris School has more than 600 students in to 4-K to 8th grade.  The school opened 65 years ago, and is the largest Catholic school in the Diocese of Charleston and state.

The Blue Ribbon school’s middle school has an International Baccalaureate program.  COKSM offers a rigorous academic program, with foreign language offered for all ages.  Students participate in the South Carolina Stock Exchange game.

Christ Our King is the only Catholic school in the state with both a president and principal.  John Byrnes serves as the school’s president.  He says, “We’ve got something for everybody, and if you want to come to a school where you’re going to be prepared for your future life, we like to say we provide a strong foundation for our students.  We have all the extracurricular activities.  We have the academics,  and we have the Catholic identity which really helps our school to be something for everybody here.”   Eighth-grade-student Shawna Swanson says, “All of our teachers are really cool and relaxed but we learn a lot.”   Teacher Marilyn Davey has taught at Christ Our King for 27 years.  She says,  “This has been my home all my life, so it is very special to me.  I do believe it’s all about community.  We have very little turn over with teachers, so we establish real strong relationships. We have wonderful bonds that make us better teachers.”   Andrew De Arellano is in he eight grade at  COKSM, “Since we’re an IB school, we kind of learn in a few different ways other than just sitting at a desk and taking notes.  We do a lot of different projects to prepare us.” “We have incredibly committed dedicated teachers. Our parents are very involved, very committed.  We really come together as a community, not only academically, but with our faith, our sports, all of the extra curricular we offer, and it works,” says principal Susan Spendido.

Christ Our King offers many extra-curricular activities and clubs, Legos, Beta club, archery, basketball,  football, choir, coding club, cheerleading.

Coming up tonight on News 2 at 5, we’ll take a closer look at the programs offered at COKSM  and the school’s outreach initiatives.
