GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – A new study reveals America is yet again one of the most unhealthy nations.
According to a study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, less than three percent of Americans meet the basic qualifications for a healthy lifestyle.
Having a healthy lifestyle is defined as partaking in a moderate or vigorous exercise for at least 150 minutes a week, maintaining a diet score in the top 40 percent on the Healthy Eating Index, having a body fat percentage under 20 percent for men or 30 percent for women, and being a non smoker.
Only 2.7 percent of the over four thousand people in the study met all four qualifications.
A local dietician says there are simple ways to get on track towards living a healthy lifestyle.
“Shop the perimeter of the grocery store, said Jennifer Gwennap, Dietician at Nutrition Plus. “If you go into a grocery store, think about the outside edges of it. You’ve got fruits and vegetables, then you’ve got meats, poultry, fish, and then you’ve got dairy. And that’s really what you want to comprise your diet of.”
The average man has a body mass index just below what’s considered medically obese. Cutting out processed foods and moving more throughout the day can jumpstart a healthier lifestyle.
