One killed in Greenville Co. officer involved shooting

One person is dead after a reported assault in Greenville County turned into an officer involved shooting Tuesday evening, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

Thom Berry with SLED says that their office has been called to assist an investigation after an initial report of an officer involved shooting at 4 West Gantt Circle in Piedmont.

Berry says that this is the 11th officer involved shooting in SC this year.

Greenville County Sheriff Steve Loftis says that a deputy was investigating the report of an assault around 7:30 p.m., when a man came out with a knife and gun.

Loftis then says the deputy called for backup. The suspect was ordered repeatedly to put the rifle down but Loftis says the man did not comply with the deputy’s orders.

The suspect reportedly yelled at deputies “Kill me! Kill me! Kill me!” and then pointed his rifle as if to shoot. Two deputies on scene fired shots at the suspect and killed him.

Sheriff Loftis reports that the deputies “used necessary force to eliminate the threat that was facing them”. He says that he does not believe the suspect returned fire.

The suspect’s identity has not been released at this time.
