Murder suspect in Olive Garden parking lot shooting arrested, bond denied

The second murder suspect in the fatal shooting at North Charleston restaurant turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday, March 22. North Charleston Police sent a release at 4:50 p.m. on Tuesday.

Jamal Shawntee Drayton, 22, is currently being held at the Charleston County Detention Center.

He went before a bond judge on Wednesday, March 23. The judge denied bond.

We learned from court affidavits that the victim, Derrick Roper was trying to break up a fight during the drug transaction when he was shot. The bullet struck him in the upper left shoulder and projectiles struck an artery, causing him to succumb to his injuries.

His family was in court. Roper’s father spoke about how hard it was for the family loosing him without saying goodbye.

On Saturday, March 19, Calvin Benekin, 22, of North Charleston, was arrested and charged with murder in connection to the shooting. He was already in custody at the time of Drayton’s arrest. Three other suspects were charged in the incident; Deshone Rivers, Brittney Wall and Tyler White face drug-related offenses.
