U.S. Marine Killed, Three Others Injured By ISIS Rocket in Iraq

An American Marine was killed and three others were injured in Iraq by indirect fire, a U.S. military official said Saturday.

The casualty near Mahmour, south of Mosul, was the result of ISIS firing a rocket at a small outpost where U.S. military service members are advising Iraqi security forces, the official said.

“The Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve can confirm the death of a Coalition service member in northern Iraq today as a result of enemy action,” the U.S.-led coalition said in a statement.

No further information was immediately released, including the Marine’s identity.

The latest casualty comes days after Secretary of State John Kerry declared the atrocities committed by ISIS against religious minorities in the Middle East are genocide, marking only the second time he has used the term in relation to an ongoing conflict.

“Naming these crimes is important, but what is essential is to stop them,” Kerry said Thursday.

The last U.S. service member killed in Iraq was in October 2015.
