SHS gym named for fallen Charleston 9 firefighter

SUMMERVILE, SC (WCBD) — In a post on the Summerville High School Athletics page, Athletic Director Brion Rutherford announced the school would name the gym after fallen firefighter Louis Mulkey.  The former basketball coach died on June 18th, 2007 in a fire at the Sofa Super Store that would claim the lives of nine firefighters.

The main gym will be known from here forward as “The Fire House” in honor of the Green Wave alumnus an former coach, the post read .

In addition to signage around the outside of the gym a wall within the gym is dedicated to Louis’ memory.

“Coach Mulkey had a lasting and profound impact on countless young people in the Summerville community as he served as a basketball and football coach, both at the high school and in local youth leagues,” Rutherford wrote.

An official dedication will be held at the first home basketball game in the 2016-2017 season.
