County Council to discuss live traffic cameras to help beach-goers

Summer is right around the corner and that means many people will be heading to the Lowcountry beaches to soak up the sun and enjoy some family time.

Traffic can be a nightmare for summer beach-goers in the area. The Mayors of Mount Pleasant, Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms believe traffic cameras are the solution to help the public out. The cameras will help beach-goers see if traffic is backed up or flowing so they can decide when to head out on the road.

They are working to implement live traffic cameras along the East Cooper beach routes to provide the public with live video of traffic conditions to help improve public safety. The three towns have already met with SCDOT to assist with the installation of the cameras.

Even better, they have the budget to complete this project, so the next step is to get the solution passed and begin installing the cameras.

As soon as the live cameras are installed, they will be available to view on the SC DOT 511 website or in the SC DOT 511 app. Download the app for iphone or for android.
