CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Dylann Roof, the man who confessed to the Emanuel AME massacre, will not be at a federal court hearing on Tuesday, April 5.
We’ve learned after conferring with attorneys, he decided not to be present but the hearing will continue as scheduled. We are expecting to find out if prosecutors will seek the death penalty against him.
Roof faces nearly three dozen federal charges related to the murders of nine people inside of Mother Emanuel in June 2015. State prosecutors already announced Roof could be executed if convicted.
His friend, Joey Meek, was also scheduled to be in court. He’s accused of knowing about Roof’s plans, but not giving that information to authorities. So far, he will still appear in court.
