OXFORD, MS. – Ole Miss sophomore Raven Saunders, a Burke High School graduate, will compete for her third straight NCAA shot put title this weekend in the Indoor Championships.
“I have to take this serious as any other championships. Definitely can’t take this competition for granted.”
In February at the Iowa State Classic, Saunders had a historic performance. On her fifth attempt, she broke the NCAA women’s indoor record by producing a 19.22 meter throw, the farthest by any female athlete.
“I try to keep that throw in the back of my mind, definitely have much more to accomplish,” Saunders told News 2. “I have never been a complacent person, always wanting more. After that throw, I feel I can definitely throw farther.”
Up next for the sophomore sensation, are the SEC and NCAA outdoor championships. After that, her focus shifts to the Olympic trials in July with the goal of joining the road to Rio.
“With the type of competitor I am, it’s not outside of my capabilities to make the Olympic finals. I love to really prepare myself when I’m placed in those type of circumstances.”
