Family of slain McClellanville man hold vigil and seek answers about shooting

McClellanville, SC – Last Saturday, a 33-year-old McClellanville man was shot and killed in Georgetown, and now his family says he was an innocent bystander.

Tonight the family held a memorial service and are asking for the public’s help identifying the person or people responsible.

Deon Geathers was a father of two young children and a friend to many others in McClellanville.

Geathers was killed early Saturday morning.

Officials say it happened around the 500 block of Greentown Road in Georgetown.

Geathers’ sister, Richadean G. Banderhoest, said, “They don’t have any leads on anything as of yesterday when I spoke to them. Nobody is talking.”

Authorities arrived on scene and found three men with gunshot wounds but Geathers was the only one who died.

Family members say Geathers was an innocent bystander.

Banderhoest said, “He has two little kids. These kids are going to grow up without a father. We are going to grow up without a brother. My mother don’t have a baby anymore. His nieces and nephews, they loved him, they worshiped him! If it takes every penny I have, this person is going to be found and they are going to be prosecuted.”

Thursday evening family and friends held a vigil service and a walk to “stop the gun violence.”

Many people spoke and urged their fellow community members not to retaliate and to speak up if they know something.

The Geathers family still has a lot of questions…and many family members are still seeking closure.

If anyone knows anything about this shooting, you’re asked to call Crimestoppers number is 554-1111.
