Woman stabbed 21 times; teen’s diary leads to arrest

AUSTIN (KXAN) — What started out as a morning spent lying on the sidewalk watching the sky, ended with a woman stabbed 21 times in Hyde Park clinging to life in a hospital.

18-year-old Pearl Ophelia Sybel Selke Scott Moen was arrested on suspicions that she stabbed a woman on Nov. 14, 2015 in an attempt to kill her.

The victim was basking in the sun drifting off to sleep after an all-night date, when she was awoken by a stranger smiling and stabbing her 21 times in various places across her body, according to court documents. The suspect was described by the victim in the affidavit as a white female with medium length dark hair, wearing dark clothing and wielding a dark colored knife.

The victim lost massive amounts of blood and had to undergo numerous blood transfusions in addition to life-saving surgery. She had a collapse lung, and will suffer from permanent nerve and tendon damage, according to the affidavit.

While police were combing through the crime scene, they found a gold ring, which would later be a key to the case. The ring was found on the sidewalk covered in blood. It was originally left out of the police reports and kept secret that the ring found was an important piece of evidence.

Police were called to Moen’s residence on Feb. 14 after she was involved in a disturbance with her mother. Moen’s mother told the responding officers she had seen a flyer police posted about the stabbing and believe the description matched her daughter. The mother informed police that Moen owned several knives and often joked about stabbing her boyfriend with them.

The next day police conducted a phone interview with Moen’s boyfriend, who told officers around November she confessed to killing someone. Police also called Moen’s mother for an interview Feb. 27. She told officers in the affidavit that her daughter was prone to violent outbursts and had assaulted her before. The mother said Moen had pulled a knife on her in the Feb. 14 incident.

Moen’s mother went on to say that her daughter has multiple journals where she would express her violent ideas about stabbing people. There was one specific entry, her mother noted, where Moen admitted to stabbing a person numerous times.

A search warrant was issued for Moen’s residence on Feb. 28 when officers were able to locate the diary. Police noted in the affidavit the journals taken from Moen’s bedroom contained details about the November stabbing. Moen noted in her journals that she lost a gold ring during the stabbing after the victim broke the necklace she wore it on.

Pearl Moen’s diary entry:

“So, okay I’ll start with the exciting bit. I stabbed an innocent woman to death earlier today (well yesterday since it’s 1 a.m.)…It was absolutely fantastic. Murder gives me a high unlike any other, it feels like this crisp unreality, flashing and sparkling, adrenaline and shock. Fight or flight mode. How do I even go about describing it. The whole thing was unreal. I’m so proud of myself. I stabbed her like 20 times. Maybe more…She screamed and grabbed at me, saying ‘What the [expletive]?! Help! Leave!’ For now I should explain why. Other than the fact that I’m a homicidal psychopath. I have a deep hatred towards people right now..Yesterday I lost my other gold ring I’ve worn all my life on a chain around my neck as it was ripped off by a girl I was murdering. Fate is weird.”

Moen is currently being held on a $1,000,000 bond in the Travis County Jail, she was booked Feb. 28.
