SLED investigating following inmate death at Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating following an inmate death at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center.

Major Eric Watson with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office says an inmate, later identified as James Brantley, 63, of Florida, was housed in housing unit B40 and began complaining about chest pains and having difficulty breathing. Brantley was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina on Thursday, February 17 shortly before 10 p.m., where he later died.

We’re told he was booked in to the detention center on February 15, 2016 by the Charleston Police Department an on outstanding bench warrant for an open container.

Authorities say at this time no foul play is suspected but the official cause of death is still pending.

As a standard practice of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, whenever an incident involved an in-custody death or a use of force resulting in a death, SLED is requested to conduct an investigation in to the incident.
