Mount Pleasant Police are searching for suspects who ran away during a traffic stop.
Charleston County Consolidated Dispatch tells News 2 that Mount Pleasant police officers were patrolling the area including Magrath Darby and Highway 17 just after midnight on Monday, February 15.
They stopped a car during a traffic stop and the suspects ran away.
According to the police report, an officer pulled the car over after going 71 in a 55 over the Ravenel Bridge. The suspects drove the car into the Days Inn parking lot off of Magrath Darby Boulevard and then the driver and passenger got out of the car and started running.
The driver headed towards the Harbor Point Apartments and the passenger ran towards the Ravenel Bridge. The driver was a black male wearing a dark brown jacket and tan pants with a red hat. The passenger was a black male wearing blue jeans and a dark hoodie.
The officer attempted to chase after the suspects but in the report he said he stopped chasing them after he couldn’t see the vehicle anymore.
When the officer got back to the vehicle, it was still in gear and had rolled into some bushes in the parking lot.
The vehicle was towed from the scene and is scheduled to be processed by crime scene.
Charleston County Sheriff’s Office says the vehicle was reported stolen on 2/14 at 11:59 p.m. and the owner was contacted.
While the officers were in the area, they heard multiple shots fired from the area of the Red Roof Inn. When officers responded to the area where they heard shots fired, they spoke to several hotel guests who all said they heard a range from 5 to 10 gunshots. Officers are still investigating after they found several 9mm shell casings in the parking lot.
Magrath Darby was closed between Highway 17 and Coleman Boulevard until 4:00 a.m. on Monday morning.
