Man charged in Upstate killing may be heading to Lowcountry

WOODRUFF, S.C. (AP) – Police in the Upstate say the suspect they have charged with killing a man outside a home may be trying to make it back home to the Charleston area.

Investigators said in a police report that 29-year-old Adriel Garnett killed the man outside a Woodruff home where he was going to play pool around 4 a.m. Saturday and then drove away in a gray Chevrolet Camaro.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger says 40-year-old Cecil Gilliam was shot several times and died at the scene, Police found six shell casings on the ground by his body.

Police didn’t give a reason why Garnett shot Gilliam. Investigators think he may be trying to drive back to his home in Goose Creek.


WOODRUFF, SC — Spartanburg police officials are investigating an early morning fatal shooting and say the suspect may be attempting to flee to the Columbia or Goose Creek areas.

According to a Saturday press release, at 4am Saturday, February 06, 2016, officers of the Woodruff Police Department responded to 405 Sharp St. for a reported shooting.

When officers arrived on scene they found the victim, Cecil Gilliam, deceased from multiple gunshot wounds.

Officials say during the course of the investigation it was established that Mr. Gilliam had been in an argument with the suspect, Mr. Adriel N. Garnett, and that Mr. Garnett had shot Mr. Gilliam.

A warrant for Mr. Garnett has been issued for murder and he has yet to be located.

It is believed that Mr. Garnett may be attempting to flee to the Columbia or Goose Creek areas. Mr. Garnett’s last known residence is in the Goose Creek area.

He is to be considered armed and dangerous.  If anyone has any information on Mr. Garnett’s whereabouts we would ask that you call 911 or crime stoppers at 888 CRIMESC.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s office issued the following statement:

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sorry report that we are actively involved in a death investigation with Woodruff PD and Spartanburg Sheriff’s Office. My office was called at 4:15 this morning to Sharpe Street in Woodruff. We found 40 Year old  Cecil Perrel Gilliam of 110 Robinson Lane Woodruff deceased from apparent multiple gunshot wounds. A more detailed exam and autopsy will be performed later to document all injuries. Scene investigation and other info will come from Woodruff P.D. Please pray for the family and friends effected.
