NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina’s busiest airport, Charleston International Airport, has seen a record number of travelers for a fifth straight year.
The airport announced Thursday that 3.4 million passengers passed through the airport last year. That’s an increase of nearly 300,000 over 2014.
The executive director of the Charleston County Aviation Authority, State Sen. Paul Campbell, says the number of passengers has doubled in the past 15 years. Campbell says the airport has reached passenger volume it was not expecting until 2025.
Officials credit the increase to bigger planes and more airlines serving the airport with new destinations.
