Berkeley County creates new website for job seekers

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC – Hundreds of workers at Century Aluminum could be out of a job as early as this week.

That’s why Berkeley County officials say they’ve made a new website to help those workers find new jobs.

The county is building an online job resource page. They’re hoping some of the 300 employees from Century Alumnium will be able to land full-time jobs with some of the other industries in Berkeley County.

Tonight we spoke with some employers who are already posting jobs on the site and say they’re here to help and to hire, this holiday season.

“Our doors are open and we are looking for new folks right now,” said Jim Hirni, who is the Director of Communications at Anchor Sign in Charleston.

“We have 50 new jobs. We are trying to hire a lot of them in the manufacturing facility,” said Hirni.

Hirni says after learning 300 employees from Century Aluminum will be laid off this week, a new opportunity exists for those men and women. “We would love to see some of those individuals come spend some time with us and become part of our full-time family,” explained Hirni.

Anchor Sign is one of several companies that has recently posted jobs on Berkeley County’s new website http://www.berkeleymeansbusiness.com/

Hirni told News 2, “We have opportunities in welding, in paint, manufacturing, and electrical.”

Officials say right now letters are being sent to companies in Berkeley County soliciting information on job openings.

Barry Jurs is the Director of Economic Development for Berkeley County and said, “We have around 100 industries out there in Berkeley County and we are going to be sending letters and reaching out to each individual industry asking them to participate.”

Any business with an opening is asked to complete a form to give details about the job.

Jacqueline McMillian is the Employee Relations Coordinator for Century Aluminum and said it’s a difficult time for their company, but they thank county officials for stepping in to help.

“It definitely pulls at your heartstrings. I think it will be a lot smoother because of the availability of jobs that are out there. With the website, it’s letting you know that, ‘Hey we have a list of jobs. We are here to support you.’”

Businesses with job openings can complete the online form and those seeking employment will be able to view available jobs here.
