Officials: Spring Street fire may have been caused by homeless trying to stay warm

Officials with the Charleston Fire Department say their units, along with the Saint Andrews Fire Department, the Charleston Police Department, and Charleston County EMS responded to a reported structure fire at 1:20 a.m. to the 130 block of Spring Street.

When fire personnel arrived on scene, they noticed heavy fire venting from the back of a two story residential structure. The structure was vacant at the time and firefighters worked to put out the fire.

A home near the abandoned structure was damaged from the fire.

There were no injuries reported.

The Charleston Fire Department Fire Marshal Division responded to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire. They determined that the fire started inside the abandoned home.

Officials say there were some homeless people staying in the structure before the fire and the cause may be related to their efforts to stay warm during the night.

Anyone with info regarding the fire is encouraged to call Deputy Fire Marshal, Rick Anewalt at 843-577-1687.
