The Citadel prepares for round 2 against Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel football team plays at Charleston Southern Saturday at 1pm, in their second meeting this season. CSU beat the Bulldogs back in September, 33-20, giving Charleston Southern their third win in a row over the cross-town rival Bulldogs.

Here are some news & notes on The Citadel:

• The Citadel won a road playoff game for the first time with its 41-38 victory at Coastal Carolina in the first round.

• The Citadel rushed for 524 yards at Coastal Carolina, the 2nd-highest single-game rushing total in FCS this season behind the Bulldogs’ 535 rushing yards in their season opener vs. Davidson.

• The Bulldogs’ 524 rushing yards at Coastal Carolina was the highest total in an FCS Playoff game since 2012 when Georgia Southern rushed for 602.

• The Citadel had a school-record four 100-yard rushers at Coastal Carolina, led by Dominique Allen’s career-high 174 yards. Tyler Renew added 129 yards, Cam Jackson collected 113 and Vinny Miller recorded 100.

• The Bulldogs’ nine wins are the second-highest single-season total in program history, trailing only the 1992 team’s 11 victories.

• Head coach Mike Houston’s 14 wins are the most by a head coach in his first two seasons in program history.

• The Citadel advanced to the playoffs for the fourth time in program history and first time since 1992.

• The Citadel’s 23-22 win at South Carolina was the first FCS victory over an SEC team since Georgia Southern, now an FBS member, won at Florida in 2013.

• The Citadel won its third Southern Conference championship and first since 1992, finishing with a 6-1 record in SoCon play to tie with Chattanooga.

• The Bulldogs’ six conference wins tied the 1992 team for the most in program history.

• The Citadel’s 41 rushing touchdowns are tied for 1st in FCS.

• The Bulldogs’ average of 359.3 rushing yards per game is 1st in the Southern Conference and 2nd in FCS, and their average of 5.86 yards per carry is 1st in the SoCon and 3rd in FCS.

• The Citadel ranks 1st in the SoCon and tied for 4th in FCS with 19 interceptions, the 4th-highest single-season total in program history.

• The Citadel is tied for 1st in FCS with five interception return touchdowns, and its single-season school-record 486 interception return yards are 1st in FCS by more than 100 yards.

• The Bulldogs rank 1st in the Southern Conference and 3rd in FCS with a defensive interception percentage of 5.37. The Citadel’s 19 interceptions have come on 354 passes, an average of one for every 18.6 passes faced.

• The Bulldogs’ 29 turnovers forced rank 1st in the Southern Conference and tied for 6th in FCS.

• The Bulldogs are tied for 1st in the Southern Conference and for 12th in FCS with 10 passing touchdowns allowed.

• The Citadel ranks 1st in the Southern Conference in tackles for loss allowed (3.33, 1st in FCS), sacks allowed (0.58, 2nd), yards per completion (17.57, 3rd), punt return defense (3.10, 6th), third-down defense (.372, 48th) and tackles for loss (6.4, 45th).

• The Citadel’s +125 scoring margin ranks 1st in the Southern Conference. In conference play, the Bulldogs ranked 1st with a +100 scoring margin.

• In conference games, the Bulldogs lead the SoCon in touchdowns (29), rushing offense (344.0), rushing defense (130.6), pass efficiency defense (112.8), sacks (20), sacks allowed (4), third-down defense (.337), first downs allowed (17.4), interceptions (11), and kickoff returns (27.4).

• The Citadel’s nine Southern Conference wins in the last two seasons are tied for the 3rd-highest two-year total in program history.
