Contract negotiations ongoing to save hundreds of Lowcountry jobs

The Santee Cooper Board of Directors called a special meeting Monday at 9:00 a.m. to discuss issues with the Century Aluminum industrial contract.

In executive session, the board is expected to receive legal advice about the contract and discuss the current contract negotiation.

An official from Century told News 2’s Raymond Owens  they have made a proposal to Santee Cooper that they believe would not require Santee Cooper to raise rates on their other customers, while still being acceptable to Century. A deal would allow them to remain open.

The meeting is 9:00 a.m. Monday at Santee Cooper in Moncks Corner.

More than 600 people work for Century Aluminum in Mt. Holly. According to the company, the average salary there is $90,000.

They have been trying to get a significant reduction in their cost of electricity from Santee Cooper for several years.
