L. Chris Stewart and Justin Bamberg, the attorneys for the family of Walter Scott released a statement regarding the the city of Chicago releasing a video Tuesday, showing the fatal shooting of black 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by a white police officer.

Walter Scott is the man who was shot and killed by a former North Charleston Police Officer after he tried to run away during a traffic stop.

The attorneys say:

While the circumstances may be different, the end result of the Walter Scott and Laquan McDonald shootings is all too similar:  an African-American man who was no immediate threat to law enforcement dead on the ground.

The family of Walter Scott was shocked but not surprised to see the video of a Chicago police officer shooting and killing a teenager.  Police shootings have become all too common today, but due to cameras, families are able to witness first-hand the final moments of their loved ones lives’.

The family of Walter Scott extends their deepest sympathies to the family of Laquan McDonald and hopes that this will serve as a teachable moment for both citizens and law enforcement.
