TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating what appears to be a murder-suicide shooting that occurred just after 7 a.m. Monday morning inside the Tampa location of Florida Hospital.
Deputies say the shootings happened inside a room on the third floor. Deputies located and secured the room where they found a man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and a female suffering from a gunshot wound.
The female victim, Alonna Tedesco age 41, was transported to the emergency room at the hospital, where she later died.
Deputies say the suspect and Tedesco were not current employees or patients of the hospital. The relationship between the suspect and Tedesco is unclear at this time.
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Colonel Donna Lusczynski said that 911 dispatchers received multiple calls about a shooting on the hospital’s third floor. Lusczynski said deputies responded quickly and were at the scene two minutes after the 911 calls came in.
“We treated it as an active shooter, since we had so many calls about shots,” she said. “There was a lot of chaos just to make sure all the patients were okay.”
Lusczynski said detectives will be looking at video from the hospital’s security cameras. They are also interviewing family members and hospital staff as the investigation continues.
Florida Hospital is not on lockdown. Deputies say it’s “all business as usual” with the exception of the incident scene. Florida Hospital is located at 3100 East Fletcher Ave. in Tampa.
