City of Charleston Smoke Alarm Blitz to take place Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The American Red Cross and the Charleston Fire Department will be visiting homes in the North Central neighborhood of Charleston as part of the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign, teaching people how to be prepared for home fires and installing free smoke alarms where needed.

The smoke alarm blitz in Charleston will take place on Saturday, November 14, 2015 from 9:00 am – 11 am. During the blitz, teams of Red Cross volunteers and local firefighters will be going door-to-door, meeting with families to test and install smoke alarms, helping them create a home fire escape plan, and discussing the importance of having everyone in the household know what to do in case of a fire.

South Carolina consistently ranks within the top ten states for home fire deaths per capita and the Lowcountry SC Chapter of the American Red Cross assists more than 1,200 people a year after disasters, primarily home fires.
