Summerville Town Council approves ordinance to change Mayor’s role

SUMMERVILLE, SC  –Summerville Town Council voted on Wednesday to approve the first reading of an ordinance that changes how the town is run.

Summerville town council unanimously passed an ordinance striking a section of the township’s by-laws naming the Mayor as Chief Executive.

That change takes away the Mayor’s power to direct executive officers without the councils approval and lower’s the mayor’s income from $45,000 to $15,000 a year.

That proposal was only on the first reading.

Wiley Johnson will be inaugurated into the mayoral position in January.
