CHARLESTON, SC- Several James Island leaders endorsed Leon Stavrinakis for Mayor of Charleston on Sunday. Stavrinakis has represented all or parts of James Island on County Council and in the state legislature for almost 18 years. Leaders cited his experience, commitment to reducing traffic congestion, and controlling growth as reasons for supporting his campaign.

Endorsing Leon Stavrinakis:

Bill Woolsey, Mayor of James Island

Peter McCoy, State Representative (R-James Island)

Anne Peterson Hutto, former State Representative

Leonard Blank, Mayor Pro-Tem, Town Council Member

Joshua Stokes, Town Council Member

Carter McMillan, Commissioner of James Island PSD, Former Town Council Member

James Island Mayor Bill Woolsey:

“If Leon is elected Mayor of Charleston, James Island will have a mayor we can work with. He’ll work with us to fix our traffic issues and control growth. He’s also a fiscal conservative who believes government should live within its means and respect the citizens. I strongly support him and encourage James Island residents in the city of Charleston to support him as well. James Island needs Leon Stavrinakis.”

State Representative Peter McCoy (R-James Island)

“I’ve seen Leon fight for Charleston and James Island up close and personal over the last four years in the state legislature. Together we’ve balanced budgets and cut taxes while still making critical investments in roads and schools. No one is more equipped to lead Charleston in a fiscally responsible way than Leon.”

Leon Stavrinakis said he was grateful to have the support of such prominent James Island leaders:

“I’ve been proud to represent all or parts of James Island for almost 18 years and I know firsthand the challenges its residents face. Traffic and out of control development have resulted in gridlock on Maybank Highway and Folly Road and I’m committed to amending zoning to better control growth, including eliminating Gathering Place zoning for areas like James Island. I will also work to implement my plan to improve congestion on Folly Road by investing in new traffic light technology and addressing traffic choke points. I’m grateful that James Island’s leaders have placed their faith in me and my proven record of managing growth and funding road improvements and I look forward to partnering with them as mayor to keep James Island special.”
