CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Charlestonians are getting a chance to thank Joe Riley, the city’s mayor for the past 40 years.
“Thanks Joe!” is the theme of events being held Sunday at Brittlebank Park and the baseball stadium that bears Riley’s name.
The festivities feature performances by singer Edwin McCain and the Emmanuel AME choir among others. There will be fireworks, a video tribute and a chance to bring a memento to be included in a keepsake book to be presented to Riley.
Institutions that Riley helped start including the South Carolina Aquarium and the American College of the Building Arts will also be represented.
Riley has served as mayor longer than anyone in Charleston history. He retires at the end of the year after 10 terms in office.
