On Wednesday, October 14, 2015, a Press Conference will be held by City Clerk Susana Mendoza, Frank M. Zuccarelli (Supervisor, Thornton Township) and Illinois State Senator Donne Trotter to announce the kick-off to nominate Emanuel AME Church, Charleston, SC for the Nobel Peace Prize.
WHO: Elected officials, ministers, and citizens: The Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza, Frank M. Zuccarelli, Board President, Thornton Township; Illinois State Senator Donne Trotter; Alderman Howard Brookins Jr (21st Ward); Alderman Leslie Hairston (5th Ward) ; and other members of the City Council; Reverend-Dr. Ozzie Smith; Reverend-Dr. Steven Lewis; Reverend Albert Tyson III; Reverend Troy O’Quin; South Holland Trustee Cynthia Doorn-Nylen; Thornton Township Trustee Joyce Washington; Dr. J.L. Weems; Brunu Sheppard; Melvin Caldwell; Algernon Penn; Tim Manning; Leonard Chiaro; and Al Benney.
WHY: The Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church of Charleston, South Carolina lost 9 beloved members of its family on June 17, 2015 through a violent and hateful act. The family members who lost loved ones, in the days following this tragedy, came together in an expression of unity and peace.
WHAT: The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to those individuals or entities that have “… done the most or best work for (peace)…and also for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”.
On Thursday, September 24, 2015, the Chicago City Council passed a Resolution stating that: “the people of the City of Chicago recognize with great admiration and empathy the strength, courage and unity exhibited by the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church family and present to them this formal expression of that admiration and support.”
On Wednesday, September 16, 2015, a 15-member delegation led by the President of the Board of Thornton Township, Frank M. Zuccarelli and Illinois State Senator Donne Trotter (D), visited Charleston and announced its efforts to nominate Emanuel AME Church for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Reverend Norvel Goff (Pastor, Emanuel AME Church) said, “This is a journey of healing. We’ve never been here before but god knows all about it. In faith, not in fear, in love, not in hate. Moreover, we accept your efforts to nominate Emanuel AME Church for the Nobel Peace Prize.”
