Charleston man arrested following police chase

Charleston, SC – Charleston police arrested a man suspected of driving a stolen vehicle early Saturday.

Police identified the driver as 27-year-old David Capers of Charleston. Capers was subsequently charged with driving under suspension – first offense, unlawful carrying of a handgun, possession of a stolen vehicle, failure to stop for blue lights, and possession of stolen goods.

Officials say shortly after 1:00 am Saturday morning, an officer near I-26 and Ashley Phosphate initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle with a stolen tag. The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit ensued.

During the pursuit, officers deployed their Stinger Tire Deflation device and deflated the vehicle’s tires. The vehicle lost control within a quarter mile of the I-526 overpass and came to a rest on Dorchester Road near Paramount Drive.

According to police, the driver fled from the vehicle and into the Harley Davidson parking lot on Dorchester Road.  After a brief foot pursuit, the driver was apprehended.
